The hypocrisy of democracy

The funny thing abt the world had evolved into is that, the value of democracy is no longer what early advocates from each respective countries pushed – but it became more like the peer pressure game among a group of 100-200 people, we call world leaders, played.

For example, Crimean or the Catalan people decides with a majority vote to be independent and break off from their parent country – thus as democracy dictates – should be legal and valid; how does the parent country ran mostly by non-locals dictate the fate of a region where the majority if not all, sought to be self-governing or decide their own destiny.

Like in Crimea, where Russia annexed Crimea (not sure if that is even the right word, if Crimea really decided on their own to join Russia) – is deemed illegal by Ukraine (which of course will say its illegal since they as a collective lost land and sovereignty; but also by the Western powers. How did leaders of other country become a “stakeholder” of the matter of Ukraine? Or for that matter, of Syria, Iraq, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Afghanistan?

We need to look back at how Civilisation came about.

By right, we start of a few, that as a family. Then allied with like-minded families to form tribes. Tribes built alliances among one another (or conquered by another) to form a Kingdom. Kingdom conquer other Kingdoms and form Empires; which forms modern form of borders. Thus its still legitimate for the Royalties to crush any attempt of rebellion or uprising because the people belong to the country.

Then came democracy where the Royalties are overthrown, elections held, and new leaders appeared. And so why we are together again? We are together because we are able to have peace, security and protect one another’s rights.

And so how does Democracy devolved into a case where Malaysia can ban Sarawak and Sabah from breaking off from the Federation that was obviously benefitting Malaya. (Malaya – Singapore – Brunei – Sarawak – Sabah are of equal standings; Johor, Perak, etc are under Malaya, and thus not at the same level of the former mentioned). If 100% of the Sarawak and Sabah people decides that they want to be independent countries, how does it become legal for Malaya to force their sovereignty upon these “Rebels”?

And thus the hypocrisy begins, where World Leaders trades benefits and lobbies to for each of their own’s agenda. Where Crimea’s popular decision to join Russia becomes illegal, to elected Syrian leader seen as illegal. Saddam and Gaddafi can be pulled out of power forcefully; and Palestinians’ recognition is considered “wrong” by the Western Powers.

And thus Singapore is a miracle, given how impossible it is to survive as a small city state, when you try to imagine Hougang trying to declare independence, and then starve to death because all food transported through Singapore to Hougang would be taxed 1000%, and transit out of Hougang to Singapore will cost 100 SGD. Its impossible. And thus Singapore is a miracle.

And thats why Democracy is an illusion.
