Conscientiousness is the key

Just did the Big Five Aspect test by Jordan Peterson, and as a result I got a clearer understanding about myself and my weakness. (You can do yours here: https://www.understandmyself.com)

And most important problem that I will need to deal with is the lack of conscientiousness.

“People characterized by the combination of high openness to experience and high neuroticism continually undermine their own convictions and beliefs by incessant questioning and make themselves lost and anxious. Open, unconscientious people tend to be “under-achievers” (particularly if also above average in neuroticism). Such people appear to have the capability to succeed, can learn quickly, and are creative, but they seldom implement their ideas.”

The above quote is extremely concerning – because it explains clearly the reason why I had been struggling to build any form of success despite of my brilliance and intellect.

  • AGREEABLENESS – 54
    • COMPASSION – 72
    • POLITENESS – 32
  • CONSCIENTIOUSNESS – 23
    • INDUSTRIOUSNESS – 18
    • ORDERLINESS – 36
  • EXTRAVERSION – 66
    • ENTHUSIAM – 53
    • ASSERTIVENESS – 73
  • NEUROTICISM – 53
    • WITHDRAWAL – 62
    • VOLATILITY – 43
  • OPENNESS TO EXPERIENCE – 91
    • INTELLECT – 89
    • OPENNESS – 84

Based on the above, I am happy to have very high Openness scores – which is a strong prerequisite for incredible success in my entrepreneurial endeavours – but however, the poor conscientiousness is holding me back, causing me to fail to implement my ideas to completion.

So what is conscientiousness?

Conscientiousness is the primary dimension of dutiful achievement in the Big Five personality trait scientific model. Conscientiousness is a measure of obligation, attention to detail, hard work, persistence, cleanliness, efficiency and adherence to rules, standards and processes. Conscientious people implement their plans and establish and maintain order.

Being low in conscientiousness also means that I procrastinate a lot and easily distracted. In order to reverse this weakness, there is a need to implement a high level of routines and predictability. Everything should be reviewed and organise them into order – orderliness should be important and minimise chaos in my life.

With the improve attention to following through of plans and routines, and minimization of clutter – I should be able to follow through with my ideas and project to the end – so that things will then start to move; fulfilling my potential and stop the cycle of self-pawnage that had been wrecking my progress for so long.

Looking Back

Looking back to my time during my secondary school or even perhaps primary school – the forceful implementation of a routine by family in my school life had indeed benefited me much; more or less allowing me to operate the highest possible level. During the year living without strict discipline in Primary 6 and my Polytechnic years had indeed proven to be less productive and me operating in a more disappointing level that I am accustomed to.

It had also been way too long since I had been operating on a “own time own target” basis – that had not been delivering the best of results. Its probably a good time to put an end on this prolonged experiment and start the belated life of routines and discipline.

So now that I know, I need to put it into action.

Lets do it.
